Environmental protection at the Molsheim lamp plant

Objective

At the Molsheim plant, the main OSRAM European facility for lamp production, over 1 million lamps are packed according to customer specifications every day. The amount of packaging used should be reduced to the absolute minimum.

Solution

Rational and optimal utilization of packaging materials on high-performance production lines has made it possible to reduce the amount of packaging material used and save energy. This has resulted in a 20% reduction in the amount of packaging material used.

In view of the fact that plastic tape can hamper efforts to recycle packaging, OSRAM currently only uses glue to seal cardboard boxes.

Since not all suppliers are able to take back delivery packaging, we have a shredding facility for waste cardboard. The shredded cardboard can be used to replace styrofoam or plastic cushioning material for shipping lamps. This has allowed OSRAM to reduce the amount of wasted cardboard by more than 70%. In addition, the shredded cardboard is 100% recyclable.
