The motifs Gabriele Basch uses in her paintings are neither created with realism in mind, nor are they derived from pure imagination. Instead, they are filtered out from a large collection of snapshots. As photographs, they are unspectacular; some are even failed attempts. In fact, they are macro-lens shots of an every day microcosm that serve as an introduction to a visual world based on painting.
For Gabriele Basch, it is important to create an optical movement between what is enhanced by eye of the viewer and what is actually seen - between the quality of the image and a purely formal approach to painting. Spaces and spots are set against an illusory application of colour. Instead of being orientated to the artwork, the choice of colours is reduced and in some places changed from positive to negative. These pictures depict unsettling dream worlds in which things are merely insinuated and nothing is clearly articulated. Instead of being a means of narration, the paintings inspire the viewer to imagine a timeless inner space - one that becomes real for a brief moment.
