With her drawings, sculptures, musical experiments and videos the Icelandic artist Gabriela Fririksdttir creates a cosmos strongly related to surrealism, populated by hybrid, mystical and sexually charged beings. The themes of her mysterious worlds ever circulate central aspects of being and transience and draw intensively from Nordic legends and a specific natural mysticism. Her enquiring mind for irrationalism and enigma is reflected by the material that she uses for her sculptures. Thus her works incorporate unusual materials such as mud, hay or dough and fur, plaster or found pieces of wood. Gabrela Fririksdttir, who is representing her home country on the Venedig Biennale 2005 with a complex video installation sets focus on her drawings and sculptures for this exhibition.
